March 20th is macaron day. It was started in Paris by Pierre Herme in 2005, and introduced several years later in New York by Francois Payard and is catching on in some other cities too. Participating bakeries will offer a free macaron to any patron who requests one. You could technically eat yourself silly, bakery hopping to shops across lower and midtown Manhattan and requesting free macarons, but if you actually buy some extra, the proceeds go to charity. Sweet! I rather like the idea of walking around to get a sample from all the different bakeries in NYC or better yet, Paris…
Since I won’t be able to partake in the festivities, here in Atlanta I am celebrating a little early by making some, courtesy of a combination of recipes from Bravetart and tips from Hungry Rabbit and Giverslog. Here is a link to the recipe, which I halved to make smaller batches. The filling is piped nutella, which keeps well at room temperature, but hardens a bit if refrigerated. The ‘feet’, a desired little lip on the bottom of each half, came out nicer on the green ones (made with a teaspoon and a half of matcha green tea powder), than the chocolate ones, but the chocolate ones had a little espresso powder in them as well, so they had more depth of flavor. I may try making these again, as there’s a lot of technique to perfect with macarons and endless flavors to try, (like these crazy-awesome kids participating in the Mac Attack #27 macaron day challenge are doing). They are not the easiest cookie to make, but even the less than perfect ones still taste melt-in-your-mouth good.
update: I am delighted to have been included in the macaron day mactweets roundup! I am also submitting my pic to Aspiring Bakers #17 – March Macaron Madness, hosted by Alan of Travellingfoodies. I’m just about drooling on my keyboard just looking all those beautiful macarons!
Excellent flavor choices–matcha, nutella and of course CHOCOLATE! The green macarons would make a nice St. Patrick’s Day treat, too.
Thank you, good idea about the st patrick’s day treat!
These are beautiful. I love the flavors.
Thanks!
YUM! These look delicious and I KNOW they are more than “a little tricky” to make. You’re a baking super star! When are you coming to sew again and bring baked goods?! 🙂
Ha! Thanks Darcy ;)… Though I really do need to get my butt in gear and make it out… It’s been forever! Would love to!
These are precious as they are beautiful Jojo. Inspiring and so much connect. Ken and Stella have beautiful blogs; must check out Giverslog. Thank you from bringing such delightful macarons to MacTweets. Wonderful to have you over. Happy World Macaron Day!
Thanks Deeba! And thanks so much for including me in the roundup! What a fun way to celebrate macarons.
Hi Jodi, I want to stop by, say hello and congrats on the macarons! I love Nutella and with matcha it is a nice composition. greetings, Sandy
Thanks for stopping by Sandy!
Gorgeous macarons. I also like the Matcha Nutella combo.
Thanks DelIcio!
I like green tea chocolate, so your matcha and nutella combo really hits the spot! Can’t wait to see the round up for this month’s Aspiring Bakers!
Me too! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the follow… I’m so happy to stumble on all these macaroons. I told the guys over at aspiring bakers I met Pierre Hermé when I was at ESCF in Paris… unfortunately I had no clue at the time I was meeting greatness. Had plans for a recipe tomorrow but now I’m all inspired to make macaroons!
How cool to have met him! Look forward to reading about your macarons! They are a bit needy, but very rewarding!
The combo of flavors here cannot get better. Wish I can try a piece.
Thanks. Nutella is my weakness!
These look delicious! I want to try making my own macarons one day too!
Thanks, you should! You have a lot of expertise elready on how they should look and taste!
These look gorgeous – what a fantastic flavour combination 😀
I hope to make macarons as beautiful as yours one day!
